Biography

I have been living and teaching English in Asia since 2002. I taught for about 13 years in South Korea and then in Oman, before moving to China in 2016. My academic background is very much science-based; however, my professional experience has focused largely on teaching English for Academic Purposes. Prior to working at CNST I taught English for Business and Accounting purposes at an International Business School in Dalian, Liaoning Province, before arriving here at CNST in September 2018, where I relish the opportunity of combining my love for science with my professional training in teaching English for Academic Purposes.
Having spent the majority of the last 20 years living and teaching English in Confucian-dominated cultures I have become fascinated with how culture influences the learning and teaching environment. Moreover, what started as professional interest in the influence of culture on learning English has very much become a central theme of all my current research interests.

Research Interests

The influence of Confucianism on the teaching and learning of English in Confucian cultures.

The importance of the “civic-friendship” in the teacher-student relationship, specifically, how the development of the civic-friendship can help improve student performance.

Universalism-Relativism as applied to issues of public health. My current research is focused on the ethical acceptability, or otherwise, of female genital mutilation.

Medical anthropology, specifically bio-social influences on the spread and control of infectious diseases, especially malaria and African trypanosomiasis.
