2022 SWC International Workshop held in hybrid in Suzhou

Created on 2022-12-02

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Soochow University-Western University Centre for Synchrotron Radiation Research (SWC), the 2022 SWC International Workshop was successfully held on November 23-25, 2022 in Suzhou. This is the first SWC workshop since the pandemic, the workshop was run in a hybrid mode and live broadcast which attracted more than 10,000 views all over the world.

The international workshop was opened by Prof. Xuhui (Jeff) Sun, Deputy Director of SWC. The opening remark was given by Prof. Tsun-Kong Sham, Director of SWC, and Prof. Shu-Ao Wang, Director of the International Office, Soochow University. Tsun-Kong Sham reviewed the development of SWC in the past decade, the purpose and vision of the workshop, and mentioned the networking opportunity provided by the workshop. He also wished SWC will make a greater contribution to the community of synchrotron radiation under the leadership of Yang Song in the next term (July 1, 2023). On behalf of Soochow University, Shu-Ao Wang highly welcomed participants from all over the world. He pointed out that, as the first international joint research centre of synchrotron radiation in China, SWC is devoted to developing international cooperation in scientific research as well as talent training and building an open platform for scholars to communicate.

Thirty-one experts from Light Sources and SWC from China and Canada were invited to give presentations about the frontier of synchrotron radiation research and applications in nano, biology, and energy. After that, Prof. Yang Song, the next director of SWC, gave the closing remark to thank the experts and audiences from both online and on-site, and wished SWC a greater international impact on synchrotron radiation in the future.

Since the establishment of SWC in November 2012, ten international workshops have been held in cooperation with Canadian Light Source, Hefei Light Source, and other light sources around the world, and become a well-known brand in synchrotron radiation.

10th Anniversary Highlights of SWC

SWC was established in November 2012 by Prof. Shuit-Tong Lee, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Tsun-Kong Sham, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. With the dedicated support of Soochow University, Western University, and worldwide partners in the past ten years, many achievements were obtained in team building, platform construction, talent cultivation, academic exchange, and scientific research.

l  Team building. The team grew from 15 members to 42 members, including from 4 to 21 at Soochow University, and from 11 to 21 at Western University. Honors and awards were achieved by members including Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

l  Platform construction. Jointly constructed by SWC and Hefei Light Source, Synchrotron Beamline Based Soft X-Ray Spectroscopies on Energy Materials is the first synchrotron radiation beamline joint built by a university and a light source in China. It passed evaluation in November 2020 and opened to the public in 2021. Since then, more than 100 papers including one in Nature and one in Nature Catalysis were published.

l  Talent cultivation. 8 students in 2+2 PhD program and 34 undergraduates were co-supervised by members from both universities, and 3 summer schools on synchrotron radiation were held by SWC.

l  Academic exchange. Cooperated with Canadian Light Source, Hefei Light Source, and other light sources around the world, SWC held 10 international workshops and carried out nearly 300 academic exchanges.

l  Scientific research. More than 770 papers were published, including more than 200 papers published in top journals such as Science, Nat. Catal., and Nat. Electron.
