Abstract:

The ability to modify the electronic properties of monolayer graphene via charge-donating or charge-accepting molecules creates new opportunities for fabricating hybrid devices at the nanoscale. Understanding the charge transfer and the resulting electronic structure at molecule/graphene interface is essential for tuning the electronic and magnetic characteristics of such hybrid devices. New experiments that involve the exploration of individual and self-assembled molecules adsorbed onto the surface of a back-gated graphene device will be introduced. The back-gated graphene device substrate is unique for single-molecule surface investigations in that it can be electrostatically gated, thus changing and manipulating the charge-state of the supported molecules. Our results also show charged molecular assemblies remarkably modify the energy landscape of graphene owing to the formation of new quantum states in graphene. While STM techniques allow us to observe the molecular electronic behavior, AFM techniques allow us to observe the precise molecular structure. Hence, combined STM/AFM measurements provide new insight into molecular structure/function relationships.

Biography:

Lu Jiong obtained his B.Sc. in chemistry from Fudan University in 2007. He then moved to the National University of Singapore, where he did his PhD studies under the supervision of Professor Loh Kian Ping. After receiving his PhD degree in October 2011, he worked as a research fellow in the Graphene Research Centre at NUS.  In 2013, he moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he performed his postdoctoral research in the group of Prof. Mike F. Crommie. His current research interests lie in exploring nanoscale chemical and physical phenomena with an aim towards understanding the basic properties of single atoms and molecules at surfaces in a device environment. He has authored and co-authored 27 high-impact papers including Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Angewandte Chemie, JACS, Nano Letter and ACS Nano.
