Abstract

Since its launch in 1869, Nature has seen its mission astwo-fold: facilitating the prompt communication of the most importantscientific developments to the relevant research communities, while at the sametime fostering a greater appreciation of these great works of science amongstthe wider public. Although the publishing landscape for scientific research iscurrently undergoing a period of unprecedented change, these core principlesremain largely unchanged. In this talk, I will shed light on how Nature editorsapply these principles in practice, and so determine which few of the manyexcellent research submissions that we receive make it through to publication.

Biography

Karl Ziemelis is the current PhysicalSciences Editor of Nature, a position that he has held since 1997. He manages ateam of ten Associate and Senior Editors who, between them, are responsible forNature's output of original research papers in the physical sciences (whichinclude astronomy, physics, materials, chemistry, Earth and environmentalsciences). The work of this team involves ensuring the quality and immediacy ofthe published research, both through careful editorial pre-screening of thepapers and by managing a fast and efficient peer-review process. A crucial componentof this work is a close editorial interaction with the authors of successfulpapers, to ensure that the published manuscripts communicate their key findingseffectively to a wide, scientifically literate audience.

He received his bachelor's in Natural Sciences (specializing inphysics) from the University of Cambridge in 1988, followed by four years oforiginal research on the electronic properties of conjugated polymers under thesupervision of Professor Sir Richard Friend (Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge),before joining the staff of Nature in 1992. When time permits, he occasionallywrites in a freelance capacity for Nature (having contributed to the news and"News and Views" sections of the journal) and also for the popularscience weekly magazine New Scientist.
