Abstract
Silicon nanocrystals (ncSi) are drawing increasing attention because oftheir earth-abundance, low cost, and purported lack of toxicity. To synthesizefreestanding ncSi, we employed several methods that could all yieldhydride-terminated ncSi. A high yield synthesis was developed that producedpolydispersions of decyl-capped, hexane-soluble ncSi predominantly with NIRphotoluminescence. Using size-selective precipitation, these polydispersionswere separated into monodisperse fractions, which allowed theirphotoluminescence absolute quantum yield to be studied as a function of ncSisize. Finally, we describe theunprecedented observation that ncSi:H can function as a single componentheterogeneous reducing agent for converting gaseous CO2 selectivelyto CO. This work presented provides opportunities for applications ofsize-selected near infrared emitting ncSi in biomedical imaging, photothermaltherapy, and CO2 reduction for the production of chemicals andfuels.
